Founded in 1907, the goal of the Opera Medicea Laurenziana was to “restore the unity and antique honor to the Monumento Laurenziano with ordinary and extraordinary care.” In 1908, all of the Complex’s real estate (which includes the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the Old Sacristy, the neighboring monuments, the spacious crypt, the Laurentian Medici Library, the Medici Chapels Museum, the New Sacristy, and the Chapel of the Princes), were consigned to the administration of the Opera Medicea Laurenziana. In its secular activity, the Opera Medicea Laurenziana has carried out notable works of innovation and restoration, both on its own as well as with the direct assistance of the Italian State.

The available financial resources come from a percentage of the entrance tickets to the Museum and the Basilica, as well as occasional sponsors. These resources make it possible for highly important projects and restorations to be carried out.

The office of the Opera Medicea Laurenziana is located on the ground floor of the Chiostro dei Canonici, adjoining the Basilica of San Lorenzo. The entrance is from Piazza San Lorenzo, 9, Florence.
